Gladys H.
Why did you start volunteering?
“My husband had passed and I was sitting at home. I knew I needed to get out, and I thought about the library. ( I didn’t know anything about the library) I found out that the library has volunteers, so I applied.”
Has volunteering changed how you see the library?
“I have learned so much about the library! They have classes on crafts of all kinds, many technology classes, there is even one on how to use your smart phone. They have programs given by outside presenters on a wide variety of subjects, something for every age, from toddlers to middle school, and of course for seniors like me. Not only are there books, but movies and puzzles, and now a seed library and also compassion care kits, it amazes me!”
What’s been one of your favorite volunteer moments?
“I work with Miss Amiee, the youth librarian, she plans programs for the children. I cut out crafts for packets for the programs. I help her with whatever I can, I never did crafts before so it is so interesting. I have been in a store and see a person, who said “I know you from the library with Miss Amiee!”
What’s something you would say to encourage someone else to volunteer?
“There is always some little thing you can do to help someone. The staff are very helpful and thankful you are helping them. At the end of the day you feel like you made a difference. There is some kind of volunteer “job” for everyone, just give it a try.”
