Volunteer Spotlight November 2024
Every month, the Citrus County Library System features a volunteer in their “Outside the Stacks” blog on their website. This month, the Floral City Library would like to shine the spotlight on Phyllis Ables. Phyllis, a dedicated volunteer has served the Floral City Community by providing 1 on 1 Genealogy sessions every Friday for the past several years. It is past time that her dedication and efforts be recognized. Here are the responses to her interview.
Phyllis
Q: Why did you start volunteering?
A: I had spare time and because of my genealogy interest, I volunteered to a designated time at the library to assist those who were seeking information on their ancestors.
Q: Has volunteering changed how you see the library?
A: Yes, I felt that the library had become somewhat obsolete in the digital world. The library contributes so much to the community. I was surprised by the in-depth preparations for different programs provided, mainly children, but adults are not ignored.
Q: What inspired you to volunteer with the library?
A: As I said, it was through my interest in genealogy that the suggestion was made to go to the library and assist those interested in learning more about their ancestors.
Q: Other than volunteering, what do you like to do in your free time?
A: I still spend a great deal of my time on genealogy. I am truly fascinated with the records available on the internet. While in the comfort of your own home, you are able to obtain records from around the world.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: PIZZA!
Q: Tell us about your best vacation ever.
A: 12 years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica. It was a once in a life time experience. Our guide made it possible for us to see the real people and how they pent their days. The highlight was visiting a mountain top, in the rain, and witnessing hundreds of humming birds. They landed on our hands and shoulders. I can still hear their tiny wings beating and seeing up close their tiny bodies.
Thank you, Phyllis, for dedicating your time to the Floral City Library! We truly appreciate all of our volunteers and are glad to spotlight one of the many special people that help to keep our branch running smoothly.
