Volunteer Spotlight December 2024

Every month, the Citrus County Library System features a volunteer in their “Outside the Stacks” blog on their website. This month, The Lakes Region Library would like to shine the spotlight on Pam. We asked Pam several questions and thought it would be fun to share her responses!

Pam

Q: Why did you start volunteering?

A: I began volunteering at Lakes Region Library in November 2020 as a tutor in the Adult Literacy program. I had worked Adult Basic Education before up north, and I found our library system provides this service in Citrus County! I worked one- on- one with a few different students, and now I am volunteering in the stacks.

Q: Has volunteering changed how you see the library?

A: I absolutely love reading and surrounding myself with books. I’m glad our library accepts donations of books for the Friends of the Library book sale fundraisers twice a year, because my shelves at home are over-flowing! I also love that our library buys current releases so I don’t go broke on Amazon.

Q: What is something you would say to encourage someone else to volunteer?

A: I truly value our wonderful libraries here in Citrus and support them in any way I can. Giving a few hours a week to read and straighten the books in the various classifications is a small gesture to show appreciation for our amazing librarians. And you never know when you might stumble on a treasure from a favorite author, or a discover new one.

Q: Other than volunteering, what do you like to do with your free time?

A: My husband I enjoy traveling, especially to the Caribbean where he can scuba dive. If we’re going somewhere new, before we go I like to find novels set in that location. And of course, I load up on Libby for beach reading!

Q: What is a fun fact about you?

A: I keep a journal of all the books I read. I include a short synopsis, not how much I liked it, and sometimes a favorite quote from the story. This sure helps when I’m not sure if I’ve read a particular book before.

Thank you, Pam, for dedicating your time to the Lakes Region Library! We truly appreciate all of our volunteers and are glad to spotlight one of the many special people that help to keep our branch running smoothly.

Citrus Libraries is always looking for more volunteers to help in our branches!
