Tax Help
We partner with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to offer free tax help at all of our library branches. Volunteers trained in tax preparation can help with filing your taxes and answer your tax questions. In person appointments can be made by visiting or calling your Library. Your Social Security Card, ID, relevant tax documents, and the AARP intake paperwork is required at your appointment.
Tax Help Appointments
Volunteers trained in tax filing and preparation will be available to help file your taxes and answer your questions on select dates at all Citrus library branches and other locations during this tax season. Other locations with AARP tax assistance in Citrus County include the Citrus Springs Memorial Library and the Crystal River Moose Lodge.
Appointments can only be made by calling your Citrus Libraries branch or by coming in and requesting an appointment.
Only ONE appointment per person is allowed. Walk-ins are currently not accepted.
Documents Needed
AARP Documents:
- Intake/Interview sheet, and Quality Review sheet
- You may pick up a copy of these sheets at any library before your appointment date. Bring the completed sheets to your appointment.
Identification required at your appointment:
- An official government-issued photo ID for each tax payer.
- Social Security numbers for everyone listed on your return. This can include the actual cards or a prior year tax return prepared by AARP.
Tax documents to bring to your appointment:
- Income related documents
- W-2, 1099 forms (Int, Div, Misc, B, R, etc.), social security statements, unemployment compensation statements, alimony received (social security of payee required for divorces finalized before 2019).
- Expense related documents
- Summary of expenses for itemizing deductions (Medical, taxes paid, gifts to charity, mortgage interest), 1098 forms.
- Health care documents
- Form 1095-A if you purchased health care from the Marketplace.
- Brokerage statements or other documentation showing cost basis (purchase price) and date purchased for all securities or property sold or transferred during the tax year
- Dependent Care Provider information
- Name, address, employer ID or SSN, and amount paid
- Tax Return
- A copy of your 2023 tax return, if available.
The General rule is to bring any tax document that states it is a tax document.
Other documentation to bring:
- Documentation of self-employment income and expense.
- Direct Deposit
- Bring a check with your name on it for direct deposit of any refund or debit of balance due. Digital documentation is accepted for those who do online only banking.
- Pension/annuity information
- If you receive a pension or annuity from a former employer, bring the date you began receiving payments.(in some cases, this is required.)
Scope of Services
Most returns are able to be prepared by AARP volunteers. However, some situations are out of the scope of services. The most common include:
- Any transactions involving digital assets(i.e. Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
- Installation of solar panels for an energy credit
- You receive rent from an apartment or house
- You have self-employment income with expenses over $35,000, had a net loss, had employees, inventory, real estate, depreciation, or have a home office
- Any cancellation of debt other than credit card debt or foreclosure of primary residence
- Casualty loss to due hurricane
- Adoption expenses

IRS forms can be found online at irs.gov. Tax forms can also be printed out at any library at no cost, up to 10 sheets.
