Libraries Update and Expand Overall Wi-Fi Access
Beginning in September 2022, the Citrus County Library System will have updated the Wi-Fi service at all 5 branch locations to include modernized and expanded capabilities. These updated and additional Wi-Fi access points will allow patrons to utilize the library’s Wi-Fi services to access the Internet and networked resources more readily within the buildings. The expansion increases the number of Wi-Fi access points from 14 interior and 5 exterior units, to a total of 32 interior and 9 exterior units distributed across all locations.
Currently, there are approximately 1 in 4 homes in Citrus County that lack stable broadband connections. Citrus Libraries recognized this challenge, specifically for those seeking employment, for students enrolled in traditional or eSchool, and for residents who rely on the Internet to stay connected to family members. In addition, the updated network will allow for increased access to the library’s digital content for patrons when coming and going from library buildings.
Library staff applied for and received a grant of $27,369 to expand and upgrade current Wi-Fi services. This new, next-generation Wi-Fi will continue to show increased benefits over time as newer devices (phones, tablets and laptops) become more efficient and incorporate newer features. All new equipment is fully compatible with a previous Wi-Fi grant project that added outdoor Wi-Fi services in August 2021. Outdoor Wi-Fi is available at all branch locations from dawn until dusk, seven days a week.
Funding for this project was provided through the Florida Department of State from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).
