5 Free Perks From your Library This Summer

Looking to get out of the house this summer? Want to take an adventure without breaking the bank? Then come visit one of our library branches to discover a space you can you can explore, relax, get creative and more! Here are some of our favorite perks we offer at the library.

Get Creative

We’re here you help you get creative this summer, all ages welcome. We have creative outlets for all types. Play and learn the ukulele or join in on a  Community Jam Session. Learn to sew and embroider, even how to use and create a project with a Cricut Maker. We have classes on crocheting, creating and making jewelry, art and painting, and much much more! Many of these programs require registration, so be sure to register early for a spot.

Get Green at the Library

Have an abundance of plants, or want to swap for a new one? Then come to one of the library’s Plant Swaps! It’s where you can bring plants to share and swap with other gardeners right here at the library. You’ll find different plants each month. Flowers, vegetable, fruit plants, and more! You can find a Plant Swap each month at our Coastal Region, Floral City, and Homosassa branches.

Want to start your garden from scratch? Then we have the seeds for you! Available year-round, the seed library lets you check out up to 4 free packets of seeds each library visit. Grow your own flowers, like marigolds, sunflowers and zinnias. Or even grow your own herbs and vegetables like basil, cantaloupe, watermelon, and more.

Having trouble or have questions about your plants? Come to an Ask a Master Gardener session, offered by the UF/IFAS Citrus County Extension. These Master Gardeners host monthly talks on a variety of plant subjects, from growing, landscaping, pests, and more

Be sure to check out our gardening books along the way!

Road Trip Reads

Going on your own adventure this summer, away from the library? Then be sure to checkout Libby, the reading app that lets you checkout eBooks, audiobooks, and digital comics and magazines. Perfect for those road trips or days spent traveling this summer. All it takes is a library card and you can get started reading or listening today!

Hop into History

Citrus County is full of history, and those who love it! Journey through the history of Floral City, Citrus County, and Florida at a Heritage Hour hosted at the Floral City Library. This program offers a unique perspective on local history on a variety of topics straight from a local Citrus County resident.

Get even more by attending a History Hour, which covers events from different points in history. We’ve hosted History Hours on many topics, including the Worlds Wars, Civil War, notable people like King Arthur and Julius Caesar, and even Stonehenge. History Hour will be returning in September, featuring the Ladies of Country Music and The Battle of Antietam.

Want even more ancient history? Check the programs the SETS Foundation has at the library that features fossils and history millions of years in the making!

Reading Challenges

Did you know we have a summer reading challenge each year for all ages at the library? Get started by using Beanstack, the reading tracking app, and start earning badges for everything you read (or listen to)! Kids can earn fun prizes and even use tickets towards grand prizes. Besides summer, we have challenges all year long, like our SSYRA challenges, and genre challenge. So there’s always badges to earn all year.

There’s so much adventure to discover at the library this summer and beyond. Be sure to check our website or stop by your library to learn about what’s going on this summer and all the perks that are available to you!
