Common Questions
Adult literacy is about ensuring that all adults have sufficient reading, writing, and English speaking skills to function in society. It also encompasses life skills, financial literacy basics, and workforce and employability competencies.
No, all you need is a caring heart and a commitment to learning, yourself! As ProLiteracy certified trainers, we will provide you with the training and tools needed to be able to tutor adults in reading and writing. We will also train you in English Language instruction. Pre-GED classes and tutoring require additional training to ensure you know the information on the exam and feel comfortable tutoring in those subjects.
Yes, there are many ways you can help in the literacy program. Classes, one-on-one tutoring, and curriculum development are all ways that our seasonal residents can volunteer.
Yes, you may tutor at just your home branch, or you may tutor at multiple branches, if you’d like to make even more of a difference.
You can visit any branch of the Citrus County Library System and sign up to become an adult literacy volunteer. You will then be contacted to attend a New Tutor Training class.
As a new tutor, you will be trained using the LitStart book methodology. Each of our five library branches has a "Lit" section filled with tutor and learner resources that can be checked out and borrowed.
All learners begin with initial entrance assessments of their skill levels, as well as, personal goal considerations. Library staff and tutors work in unison to periodically assess and revamp lessons to meet needs.
Adult Literacy Services staff are available by phone, email, or face-to-face for consultation and assistance. Some tutors enjoy resource sharing amongst themselves and even sit in on tutoring sessions with one another to gain feedback about working with their learners.
After the initial New Tutor Training, there are several options for specialized training such as citizenship tutor training, pre-GED instructor training, and learner assessment workshops. You may also attend our quarterly continuing education refreshers.
